Based on independent research by the CRF Institute, the City Lodge Hotels Group has been certified as a Best Employer South Africa 2011/12. The research shows that we have outstanding HR policies and excellent working conditions!

To become a certified Best Employer, the City Lodge Hotels Group participated in the HR Best Practices research survey, a fully audited process which covers HR policies and practices, and scores performance relative to an international standard.

Our tagline – ‘people caring for people’ – is aimed not only at our guests, but at all stakeholders in the organisation: shareholders, employees, and the community at large. It’s a concept that comes through in every activity performed at City Lodge and encapsulated most recently in our newly launched initiative: ‘I’m Kind’.

The ‘I’m Kind’ initiative is based on the concept of ‘paying it forward’ – and advocates that it’s every person’s responsibility to create an environment of kindness. The ‘I’m Kind’ programme has been introduced to increase service levels, and is just one example of innovative measures we’ve taken to drive service delivery, and in so doing, encourage creativity among employees.

Innovating around service levels

The ‘I’m Kind’ programme in turn engenders our novel approach to Corporate Social Responsibility. At City Lodge, CSR activities are not divorced from the rest of our business, but are seen as a natural progression of the ‘I’m Kind’ programme.

Awareness around CSR activities as well as environmental issues are high on the agendas of all staff members. The programme blurs the lines between our treatment of our customers, our suppliers, the community and the environment. They are all seen as one and the same. Positive behaviour in any area is recognised and rewarded.”

Kobilski points out the programme has spin-off for organisational change too:

Says 27-year-old Abia Nicodimus Rakoma, who has a National Diploma in Hospitality Management and BTech (Hospitality Management):

“I joined the City Lodge Group in 2007 as a junior assistant manager and worked my way to my current position as General Manager of Road Lodge, Carnival City. My responsibilities include guest relations, labour relations, and management of accounts as well as overseeing health and safety issues, and the general day-today running of the hotel.

I love working for the Group because of the opportunities for development. I enjoy the challenges I face in my role as a young General Manager – it is important to me to mentor and groom other employees, just as I have been mentored. Individuals who are career oriented and dedicated will thrive in the City Lodge environment.”
