‘I want to travel’ is one of the most popular answers given when people are asked what they want to do in the new year. With all the amazing imagery and beautiful photography out there of places both near and far, it’s no wonder people have a burning desire to travel.
Older generations saw travelling as something reserved for businessmen and women, or for the wealthy. Thankfully, this isn’t the case anymore and just about anyone can save up and go on an adventure.
So, if you don’t already want to travel, here are 3 fantastic reasons why you should be making travel plans:
1) Turn The World Into a Classroom
Not all things worth learning are taught in a classroom or the boardroom, that’s why some view life as a continuous lesson. Travel can be looked at in the same way.
When travelling you open yourself up to experiencing diverse cultures, languages and people. Even visiting a neighbouring city can teach you new things about your country, your home and the world around you.
2) Change Your Point of View
You can’t expect to travel and not learn something about yourself. Travelling not only teaches you about yourself, it often makes you question your views, but most importantly, it expands your knowledge.
Whether you’re in a foreign land or you’re visiting your favourite city, your ideals, beliefs and perspectives will be challenged and changed.
For example, a visit to Robben Island could change your perspective on the treatment of prisoners, or open your eyes to the harsh realities Nelson Mandela had to face for 27 years.
3) Get Away and Let Go
Last, but certainly not least, travelling allows you to own your own time and lets you unwind. By escaping the ‘real’ world you are investing in yourself and your ability to produce great work.
In fact, research has shown that going on holiday can make you more productive when you go back to work or school. Don’t believe us? Read this article by Project: Time Off – Five Reasons Ignoring the Power of Vacation is a Major Business Mistake.
