For some, travelling is as easy as packing a bag and hopping on a plane, but for others, it’s a scary prospect. Having to leave the safety of your home and sometimes your country is daunting, but often our jobs require us to travel to consolidate and build meaningful connections with people and clients in other countries.

For those who worry about things not going as planned and are concerned about their safety, here are a few travel hacks to help put your mind at ease:

1)      DUPLICATE DOCUMENTATION:

Worried you may leave important documentation somewhere, or that they might get stolen? Put your mind at ease and get tech savvy. We suggest making digital copies of all your important documentation and saving them on a memory stick.

If it makes you feel safer and a little bit more secure, you can even place your memory stick on a necklace to keep it on you at all times.

2)      DOWNLOAD FOURSQUARE AND USE IT AS A TRACKER:

Unsure of where you’re going or nervous about losing your way in an unfamiliar place? Use Foursquare. This app not only identifies surrounding areas or landmarks, it’ll allow you to check into places so you can keep a digital road map of where you’ve been.

You can also use the app to view and read up on places you’re going to be visiting, such as the hotel whose conference room you’ll be using or the restaurant you’ll be visiting for lunch.

3)      MEDICATION, ALLERGIES AND EMERGENCIES

We believe there is no such thing as being over prepared, especially when you’re in a foreign country. Whether you’re a nervous traveller or not, this hack is always a good idea – just in case.

When travelling we suggest keeping a pocket book, or small notebook with you that contains any medical information about you. If you’re on chronic medication, have allergies or have any religious beliefs about specific medical procedures, we suggest you write them down and keep them on you.

This way doctors and medical staff will know how to treat you if something should go wrong. This is especially helpful if you are not able to speak their language.

There is nothing wrong with being a nervous traveller, but don’t let your worrying ruin your trip. The hacks mentioned above are fail safes to help you feel more at ease in foreign surroundings. You may never need to use your medical pocket book, or have to use your memory stick to retrieve lost documentation, but if having them helps you feel more in control, we say embrace it. Remember, not everyone is a confident traveller, but having the right hacks, might just help.

Happy travels!
