We have exciting news: next year the City Lodge Hotel Group will start building its first ever hotel in Tanzania! The City Lodge branded hotel will have 147 rooms and is to be built in the vibrant capital city of Dar es Salaam, more specifically in the Ilala Municipal District. The development, which is subject to the issue of regulatory permits and approvals, is expected to cost around $22 million, with ground-breaking to take place in the first quarter of 2015.

The Tanzania hotel is in keeping with our focus on entering (and winning over!) the East African hospitality market. We already have our Fairview Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya. And we are not limiting ourselves just to the east of the continent; there’s our recently acquired Town Lodge Hotel Gaborone in Botswana, and we are also investigating the building of hotels in Uganda, Rwanda, Namibia, Zambia, Mozambique and Mauritius!

Next year will also see us breaking ground at the upmarket Two Rivers Complex, in Nairobi, further establishing ourselves in Kenya. We will start construction on a 170-room City Lodge Hotel, which will cost $23 million to develop. It should be completed by October 2016, and we can’t wait.

Situated in Nairobi’s diplomatic blue zone, the Two Rivers development is the brainchild of Centum, which is East Africa’s largest investment company. Spread across 40 hectares of prime land adjacent to the upmarket residential suburbs of Runda and Rosslyn Estate, it is being designed to become East Africa’s premier destination to meet, do business, live and shop within a master planned urban lifestyle environment.

“We are very excited about this new hotel as it signifies the confidence that we have in expanding our presence in Kenya and East Africa to meet the accommodation needs of business and leisure travellers,” says Clifford Ross, our CEO. “This will be the first time that we are developing a green-field hotel in the region, also illustrating our optimism about the prospects for the Two Rivers development and the high profile status and draw-card potential it will have in Nairobi and further afield.”

“Our international business development team has been examining growth opportunities in East Africa for the past couple of years and we believe that this investment will act as a catalyst for other hotel developments we are considering in the region.”

A NEW HOTEL FOR NEWTOWN

If that weren’t enough, there’s another exciting development well along in the pipeline, namely the construction of a 148-room City Lodge Hotel at Newtown Junction in the Johannesburg CBD.

Yup, we’ve concluded a land and building lease agreement for the development of a brand-spanking new hotel that will give business travellers and a wide range of leisure travellers a fantastic venue for accommodation in the heart of the city. Newtown has become one of the most vibrant places to visit in Johannesburg and soon there’ll be a great new place to stay when there!

Take a look at these exterior views (artist’s impressions) of what’s coming – it’s going to be great!

Opening date is towards the end of 2015.

We’re excited about the prospects for all three new City Lodge Hotels and look forward to them meeting the needs of business and leisure travellers in the years to come.

CITY LODGE WATERFALL CITY TO OPEN SOON

We’re pleased with the progress being made on the development of the 149-room City Lodge Hotel Waterfall City (Midrand) which is on track to open its first rooms in December of this year and be fully open in February of next year.

We also hope that final approvals for our previously announced 90-room Road Lodge Pietermaritzburg will soon be received, and then we can get cracking with this new hotel, thereby being able to offer our clients a place to stay when in Pietermaritzburg.

Watch this space, as they say, for further updates on our expansion plans!
