For seven years running now, Earth Hour has been celebrated at 8:30PM on the last Saturday of March whereby millions of people around the world switch off their lights as a symbolic gesture to show their commitment to taking positive actions for our planet.
The City Lodge Hotel Group switches off
From 8:30 to 9:30 PM, hotels within the City Lodge Hotel Group switched off as many lights as possible and had some fun with their guests! Both staff and guests participated in the novelty of the hour, but they also recognised the importance of its contribution to energy saving and the environment.
Signs were displayed at the Front Desk to make guests aware of the occasion and then hotels were left to their own imagination when celebrating the special hour! Some hotels placed touch lights and candles around the Reception area and hotel; others gave glow sticks to guests checking in! A few hotels made “Earthy” cupcakes for clients to enjoy with tea and coffee during the evening; and even turned off their air conditioners!
Across the country, the City Lodge Hotel Group contributed to Eskom saving more than 500 MW during the special hour.
