2013 eta Awards Gala Evening
At a gala event held in Johannesburg, City Lodge was presented its First Runner-Up award for its highly effective sustainable energy management project which has been implemented across the group, comprising 55 hotels and 6,755 rooms in South Africa, Kenya and Botswana.
While there were six entries in the semi-finals of the commercial category, this was whittled down further for the finals. Judging sessions took place between August and October.
Criteria for the award, aimed at showing proven application of sound energy efficiency technologies or applications in the commercial sector, included achievement, performance, cost benefit analysis and the awareness and impact of the project on a wide range of stakeholders situated in various locations.
City Lodge’s Sustainable Energy Management Project
As previously mentioned, City Lodge has installed over 45,000 LED down-lights and other energy efficient lights throughout its hotels. It has also installed heat pumps at many of its hotels, a process it will complete early next year. In addition, the group has also introduced a wide range of behavioural changes in the way hotels, staff and guests utilise resources.
Earlier this year, the group became a member of Eskom’s 49M campaign, committing to cutting is electricity usage by at least 10%, a figure that it has easily surpassed.
We are pleased to have come so close to winning this highly regarded award as it reflects the huge focus and time and effort we have dedicated to improving our energy efficiency on a day to day basis,” said Clifford Ross, chief executive of the City Lodge Hotel Group, who also congratulated Makro on winning the category.
Our commitment to this project has been total and will provide an excellent foundation for us to make even greater contributions to this vital area of our business in the years to come.”
