The first sods have been turned for the development of City Lodge Waterfall City, a 150-room hotel that is scheduled to be opened towards the end of 2014.
Hotel number 56 in the City Lodge Hotel Group, taking its overall room numbers to 6,905 in South Africa, Kenya and Botswana, the hotel is being developed as part of a long term land and building lease agreement with a total development value of around R130 million, R40 million of which will be furniture, fittings and equipment, paid for by City Lodge.
Bringing quality hotel accommodation to an exciting new development node
Situated at the entrance to the multi-use Waterfall City development around 300 metres from the Allandale off-ramp on the N1 freeway between Johannesburg and Pretoria, the hotel will comprise a ground floor and four upper levels and will ideally complement the City Lodge Hotel Group’s successful 118-room Town Lodge Midrand, situated less than a kilometre away, within the Waterfall Park office complex. The new hotel will also offer convenient access to the Gautrain Midrand station.
Significantly, City Lodge Waterfall City will be the second time that the group has partnered with the developer, Atterbury Property Developments (part of soon-to-be-listed Attacq Limited), following the development of City Lodge Lynnwood within the Lynnwood Bridge mixed-use complex in Pretoria, which opened in 2010.
Waterfall City, one of biggest multi-use property developments in Africa, is being developed around the 116,000 square metre Mall of Africa shopping complex situated within the 311 hectare Waterfall Business Estate which has 1.7 million square metres of developable land approved to date.
We’re excited about building our first new hotel in South Africa since 2010 and we believe there is a great future for Waterfall City, which will be an important new development node linking Midrand to the northern Johannesburg area,” said Clifford Ross, Chief Executive of the City Lodge Hotel Group.
The City Lodge Hotel Group, which was founded in 1985, has 52 hotels in South Africa across the Courtyard, City Lodge, Town Lodge and Road Lodge brands. It also has a Town Lodge in Gaborone, Botswana, and a 50% stake in two hotels in Nairobi, Kenya.
Other expansion opportunities are being examined in East, West and Southern Africa and the group has also recently announced that it will be developing a 90-room Road Lodge in Pietermaritzburg.
