City Lodge Hotels is the latest company to pledge its support for the 49M energy saving campaign. As energy efficiency gains momentum as a business imperative among companies in South Africa, 49M urges South Africans to reduce their energy consumption by at least 10% by simply changing the way they use electricity.
By adopting no cost and low cost energy efficiency interventions, companies can reduce their energy costs substantially. At a signing ceremony held at City Lodge Hotels’ head office in Bryanston, Johannesburg, City Lodge Hotels became the 107th entity to pledge support to the 49M initiative.
Excited to be part of 49M initiative
Alastair Dooley, Divisional Director of Finance:
Our drive to become more energy efficient and environmentally friendly across our operations has come a long way since we introduced a sustainable energy management pilot project at Town Lodge Sandton in 2009. Following the success of the pilot project, which was focused on changing the behaviour of hotel staff in relation to energy usage, the programme was rolled out across our 52 South African hotels, leading to a 15% energy saving.”
This year, on the back of this behavioural change, City Lodge Hotels has implemented technology and equipment changes to further increase energy savings through installing LED lighting, other energy efficient lighting, and heat pumps for the efficient heating of water. Coordinated by Pretoria-based Energy Resource Optimizers, our on-going energy efficiency initiative involves constant metering and monitoring and has involved considerable training of hotel staff around the country.
The behavioural element of our energy saving initiative has worked really well and we are now supplementing this with state-of-the-art technology which will improve our efficiency with regard to electricity and water and lower our carbon footprint.”
Lighting the way
By installing LED lighting and other energy efficient lighting, City Lodge hotels will save around 4.2 gigawatt hours of electricity a year – that’s a monetary saving of around R4 million. Between February and May, hotels across the group’s four brands – Courtyard, City Lodge, Town Lodge, and Road Lodge – received a lighting makeover which involved more than 45,000 lamps being changed, around 35,000 of which are downlights.
Ross Phinn, Divisional Director of Operations:
The way we do things has changed considerably over the past four years and the efficient use of resources has now become engrained into our operational culture. Our aim is to constantly monitor our energy efficiency, always looking for new ways to improve on what we are doing. It makes good business sense for us and helps us to help the environment.”
Pieter Pretorius, Senior Manager Strategic Marketing at Eskom said he was pleased that more companies were prepared to come on board and ensure the energy saving campaign achieves its mandate of achieving at least 10% energy saving:
“We are pleased that the City Lodge Hotels group partnered with us as we increase our efforts to persuade companies and individuals to do more to save electricity.”
